December 1998ASSEMBLYMAN HOWARD KALOOGIAN told Capitol Watch the GOP "base did not turn out. There was no message" to bring them out, he said. "Lungren told us he was anti-crime, after saying the crime issue had been largely solved. He was prolife, but that was some quirky Catholic thing, which had no appeal to anyone not a Catholic and many Catholics are not Republican. He endorsed ending the car tax, but never campaigned saying 'Elect me and I'll get rid of it.' There was no message."--Capitol Watch, October 30 - November 5,1998 I demurred on two counts. (1) I don't think liberal bishops, who already know the Legionaries to be unequivocally orthodox, will be fooled or lulled to sleep by a bland Register that shies away from the controversies in the Church. If anything, I said, the liberal bishops' suspicions of the up-and-coming Legionaries will only be intensified, for those bishops will regard the ironic stance of the Register as a pose, even a Machiavellian ploy. (2) A weekly national newspaper has to be a newspaper, not a public relations sheet serving some other purpose, however worthy that purpose is. --"The Issue That Won't Go Away," New Oxford Review,November 1998 --Fred Snyder, Letters to the Editor, Southern Cross,November 5, 1998 On the witness stand during one of the pro-life trials, Slepian admitted that he perpetrated about 50 abortions per week, but pro-lifers who maintained a consistent watch at the mills where he worked say that he was possibly doing that many every day.... How close was Slepian to a conversion? Behn told The Wanderer that the Buffalo-area pro-life Clergy Council had invited Slepian to address its monthly meeting, and Slepian -- who had expressed interest in attending -- had promised to give his answer on Saturday, the day after he was killed. --"Mediarchy Uses Abortionist To Glorify Vice and Corruption," The Wanderer, November 5, 1998 |
