ASSEMBLYMAN HOWARD KALOOGIAN told Capitol Watch the GOP "base did not turn out. There was no message" to bring them out, he said. "Lungren told us he was anti-crime, after saying the crime issue had been largely solved. He was prolife, but that was some quirky Catholic thing, which had no appeal to anyone not a Catholic and many Catholics are not Republican. He endorsed ending the car tax, but never campaigned saying 'Elect me and I'll get rid of it.' There was no message."

....(A) LAYMAN WHO IS CLOSE TO THE LEGIONARIES OF CHRIST (which took control of the Register recently) and is supportive of the Legionaries and well acquainted with their mission....phoned me, apparently on his own initiative, to explain and justify the Register's banning of our ads. We had a most amicable chat. He said the Legionaries are producing lots of good young priests, and the challenge before the Legionaries is to get those priests placed into dioceses -- including, I presume, your "average" diocese. The Legionaries must therefore stay on good terms with priests and bishops of all theological persuasions. Thus, if the Register, in either its advertising or nonadvertising sections, were to appear to take strong stands against dissenters and theological liberals, doors would be closed and priests would not get placed....

I demurred on two counts. (1) I don't think liberal bishops, who already know the Legionaries to be unequivocally orthodox, will be fooled or lulled to sleep by a bland Register that shies away from the controversies in the Church. If anything, I said, the liberal bishops' suspicions of the up-and-coming Legionaries will only be intensified, for those bishops will regard the ironic stance of the Register as a pose, even a Machiavellian ploy. (2) A weekly national newspaper has to be a newspaper, not a public relations sheet serving some other purpose, however worthy that purpose is.

WHY STAND WITH CLINTON? Regarding the Oct. 22 issue, page 17, Father Carroll's awards case is crowded and it is unfortunate that he is part of another photo opportunity. Once again, just weeks before the election, the White House reaches out to use a member of our clergy. "This kind of recognition is great," says Father Joe. "I just attend the ceremony to take the bows." Father Joe and St. Vincent de Paul have done a great job before and since the Joan Kroc Center, but they don't need to stand up with this president and infer that he is someone that the Catholic Church is happy to stand with for photos, etc. I remain confused that something this obvious is gratefully accepted.

IN THE RECORDS OF FETAL DEATH CERTIFICATE files with the city of Buffalo, it may be that the majority of them bear the signature of Barnett Slepian. He once told a pro-life colleague that the reason he aborted babies was that he could make four times as much money in a third of the time, as compared to routine ob-gyn work.

On the witness stand during one of the pro-life trials, Slepian admitted that he perpetrated about 50 abortions per week, but pro-lifers who maintained a consistent watch at the mills where he worked say that he was possibly doing that many every day....

How close was Slepian to a conversion?

Behn told The Wanderer that the Buffalo-area pro-life Clergy Council had invited Slepian to address its monthly meeting, and Slepian -- who had expressed interest in attending -- had promised to give his answer on Saturday, the day after he was killed.
