TIJUANA VS. LOS ANGELESYour story on Mexico's new cathedral in Tijuana was intensely interesting [see "For Catholics on Both Sides," January News Notes]. I could not avoid comparing it with the new Los Angeles cathedral. I especially liked the Tijuana diocesan plan for the old cathedral: "It will be preserved with a special designation for all it has meant to the history of Tijuana in the 20th century...." In contrast, on this side of the border, St. Vibiana was abandoned and her historic cathedral was destroyed. I believe that the new Tijuana cathedral deserves the support of all "Anglo" Californians for the Church's leadership there in honoring Christ and His Holy Mother and in serving the Catholic people of Baja California, our good neighbors and confreres. Patrick F. Flynn Your December issue is outstanding. On November 5th at the 12 p.m. Mass our pastor preached(?) only on the Diocesan Church Organizing Project and its organizing in the parish, Most Precious Blood, Chula Vista. Since the election was only two days off and nothing was said about it before, I expected the pastor to at least remind the congregation of their Catholic duty to vote and to at least to vote only for pro-life candidates. Not a word was said. The proposed expansion of Brown Field is the big political issue with the pastor. It's no wonder people like Bill Clinton get into office. John Farnsworth I've only seen such meanness and vileness from one other segment -- the KKK. Jesus, Holy Mother Mary would be ashamed of you. How ugly you are. Anonymous I am enclosing a contribution for your newspaper, which I receive each month. I commend you for this fine publication that tells it like it is, with truth and integrity. So many "Catholic periodicals" promote the liberal agenda fostered by the many liberal nuts in the Church. I read your monthly publication in its entirety since it has so much valuable information, especially on pro-life activities. We could use a paper like yours in Florida. One thing I would mention to you and other editors is to use the word "pre-born" rather than "unborn" in referring to developing infants not yet born. "Pre-born" implies a phase in the life of the developing infant, which "unborn" does not convey. "Unborn" is a negative. "Pre-born" is a positive word that implies continuing development of the infant. Pro-abortionists use the word "unborn" to de-humanize the fetus as less than fully human and therefore not a real person. The pro-abortionists use semantics in other ways, e. g., they refer to pro-lifers as "anti-choice" extremists. For that reason, I refer to the pro-abortion nuts as "pro-death abortion choice extremists." They get very upset about it, and I love it. Like you, I like to tell it as it is, and not use euphemisms when you are dealing with killers. I know that you do occasionally get some negative letters, usually from the liberal nuts, but at least you know they are reading your newspaper, so maybe God's grace will enlighten them. All the best to you and your staff in bringing truth and morality to your many readers. Father Vincent J. Sheehy, Pastor, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church I don't know if you are interested in things like this, but during the Life Chain I stood on the south side of Balboa Avenue by the Longs Drugs and across from a gas station from 2 until 3:30. From about 2 to about 3:20 there was a police car parked on the north side of Balboa on the gas station property with 2 officers in it. For 20 to 30 minutes they were visited by 2 officers, one male and one female on foot patrol, and twice by another officer riding a bicycle. What was interesting, at least to me, was that at least 11 different police cars went by that location going east. And 2 of them went by twice. I think that 2 went by before I started to record the car numbers. I wonder if these cars were moved in from other districts or extra cars were added. We also got 50 "thumbs up" to just 8 "thumbs down," which was better than last years's 41 to 13. Bill MEDICAL QUESTIONS In every News Notes you send me I see people protesting abortion. That is great, but why doesn't anyone ever protest all the other things American doctors do? I realize some hysterectomies and caesarians are necessary, but not the numbers that are being done today. American doctors keep ripping the insurance companies off and getting away with it. No wonder insurance premiums are so high for everyone. I can't believe a whole nation tolerates this. In Japan the caesarean rate is only 7% instead of the 22% and higher rate in the U.S. Why don't the people in Japan "sue" their doctors if they don't get the "perfect baby"? Could it be that there are too many medical malpractice attorneys here? Thank you. D. T. P. S. Why don't people also protest the fact that 45 million people in this country can't afford medical insurance and the U.S. has no national health care plan? |
