MARCH 2002 LETTERS
CORRECTIONS In the February, 2002 story, "True Colors Bared," the phrase "homosexual councilmembers Toni Atkins (District 8) and and Donna Frye (District 6)" should have read "homosexual councilmember Toni Atkins (District 3) and Donna Frye (District 6)." The photograph of Toni Atkins on page 6 was misidentified as Councilmember Christine Kehoe. So the Girl Scouts allow lesbian members ["True Colors Bared," February News Notes]. No objections whatever. Fascinating. Now do I understand this? While it's "dangerous" and "unnatural" for Roman Catholic priests to be in close proximity to young boys, lesbian troop leaders make perfectly acceptable role models for young ladies. Is there an inconsistency in this? Heck no! In fact, I have no doubt that lesbians can teach the Girl Scouts many interesting things they would never learn at home. Moreover, the question as to WHY lesbians would wish to become troop leaders is answered by Willie Sutton's explanation as to why he chose to rob banks. Irv Jacobs In reference to the article on UCSD Counter-Reformation in January, 2002 ["UCSD Counter-Reformation"], how can we find out why this situation (to begin with the onset) was permitted by Bishop Brom? He must surely be aware of what situations exist in San Diego. Isn't he? R. Northoff-Gutierrez It would be true that you are truly a S.D. Lay Catholic newspaper if you would only leave the politics to the politicians -- they truly do not belong in a Catholic newspaper. No wonder why so many young Catholics have left their church and joined Horizon. As so many from the Immaculata have told me, your bishop is a control freak -- not enough religion. Even some of the old-timers avoid Mass when they know the bishop will serve Mass. How about concentrating on peace and prayers for the young military people that lose their lives fighting for our country. God bless, J. Stevens Allyson Smith is to be commended for her article "True Colors Bared," February issue. It's a sad situation when immoral men and women try so hard to push their abominable lifestyle on all moral and Christian people, let alone the Boy Scouts. Also the article by Bob McPhail on Bob Filner. A book could be written on his background and present status, none good. It is a shame that politics can not be discussed in the Catholic Church, but after Mass when coffee and goodies are had, speak up. So many Christians have no idea of their candidates' track record. I am a Pearl Harbor survivor and hear over and over "remember Pearl Harbor," which is good, but today I would say, "remember Gray Davis." The News Notes is to be commended for the job they are doing in putting the honest version on what is really going on. D.H. Mikesell As you know, there are four open seats on the San Diego City Council. In District 2, there are three leading candidates: Michael Zucchet, Wayne Raffesberger, and Kevin Faulconer. Wayne Raffesberger and Kevin Faulconer are registered Republicans and are splitting the more conservative, downtown business types. Knowing Raffesberger and Faulconer to be moderate Republican types, I can only assume they are pro-abortion (although I have not asked either of them specifically about their position). Faulconer has received the official endorsement of the local Republican Party, and he spoke in support of the BSA lease extension before City Council. Zucchet has unions and liberals of all sorts heavily supporting him. He has been endorsed by nearly all local Democrat elected officials (Atkins, Kehoe, Inzunza, Vargas, etc.). Zucchet is on record publicly supporting homosexual rights, favoring of the syringe exchange program, and he was opposed to the Balboa Park lease extension with the Boy Scouts. Ironically, Raffesberger and Faulconer are not the object of my disappointment as Republicans. As a life-long Catholic, I am furious at that hypocrite Zucchet! It is my opinion that most Catholics are born into Catholic families and are raised within the teachings of the Church (albeit increasingly more liberal as the decades pass). Some Catholics may fall away from the Church as they become adults especially as they are exposed to liberal ideals. However, a few of those lapsed Catholics eventually rediscover the Faith and return to the Church. However, it takes a huge commitment of faith for a non-Catholic to WANT to become Catholic As an adult convert, fully aware of your actions, you accept the teachings of the Church in sum, not picking what you want to follow or believe. It seems Michael Zuchett's wife is Catholic, and he promised her he would convert to Catholicism after they were married. I have no idea what religion he was when he met her, but he went through the RCIA program in 2001 (most likely through St. Brigid's or All Hollows, but I don't know which parish for certain) and supposedly came into full communion with the Catholic Church. I find it appalling and highly hypocritical of Zucchet to accept the Holy Sacrament of Communion knowing full well he opposed the teachings of the Church on the volatile issues of homosexual rights and abortion. Being in direct conflict with the teachings of the Church, it seems to me that only a complete hypocrite would have done what Zucchet did. Please don't repeat the mistake of Bishop Maher (with Lucy Killea) and make a pro-abortion victory out of this for Zucchet. The issues here are honesty and integrity. If Zucchet cannot be honest to God and the Catholic Church (or his wife and her family), how is he expected to exercise integrity with voters and the people of San Diego? Anonymous Your front-page story on Bob Filner and his opponent, Dan Ramirez is a long-awaited exposé, but much more is needed to expose Filner and bring about his defeat [see "He Doesn't Even Live Here"]. I have investigated Mr. Filner for some time now. His life needs to be scrutinized by a major effort on the part of pro-life forces so that the good people of the South Bay can turn out in force to rid themselves of this character. Filner is the son of a wealthy commodities broker in the state of New York. Filner was born on September 4, 1942 in Pittsburgh. He was educated in New York State and then at SDSU became a tenured professor of history. Of course, he had plenty of money even then and soon was a power of in the San Diego Board of Education, becoming president. From this base he became city councilman from Hillcrest and the Third District, where he was supported by the homosexual militant lobby, and then he went as a carpetbagger loaded with money to the South Bay and became Congressman. Extremely leftist and liberal, Filner has the usual 1960s activist credentials ingratiating himself with the usual special-interest groups. Very little can be found out about him, because his big money prevents intense scrutiny, but you are entirely correct that he is adamantly opposed to the straight lifestyle and all pro-life movements. We need to put this bug under the microscope and expose him in the same way that the homosexuals and feminists go all-out to expose the innocents who fall under their displeasure. Mr. Filner is one of the leading supporters of the Clintons and one of the most bitter enemies of all things Christian. He has gained the support of Mr. David Copley and the local Copley newspaper, and that tells us a lot. Name withheld I enjoyed reading Allyson Smith's account of her T.V. debate with the homosexuals ["Simply State What It Is They Do," December News Notes]. At first, it seemed that Ms. Smith was outnumbered 3-1, but with "truth" on her side, she seemed to speak well against homosexuality. Ms. Smith in closing said the power of prayers pulled her through the ordeal, and the power of God. Now how can homosexuals argue with that? Where does their strength come from? Craig Galik We appreciate News Notes tremendously. You are doing a valuable service to the Catholic community of San Diego. God bless you and your endeavors. John Farnsworth Prayer is the answer. Faithful, fervent prayer. Every saint said this. But Americans are activists. Many modern Catholics love doing things and talking to prayer. They neglect prayer and rush around in circles. They do not seem to know that Christ prayed for thirty years before he began to preach. Without prayer we do our work instead of God's work. We fail. The saints, people of prayer, accomplished great things. The little catechism tells us at the very beginning that we are here to know Chirst so we can love him and follow him. In prayer Christ comes to us. We visit with him. We learn of him. Jesus said, "Learn of Me." We need less talk, less running around. We need to pray. Unless we have divine assistance all that we do will fail. Fr. Rawley Myers Homosexual power and influence are growing by quantum leaps, because so-called Catholics and so-called Protestants have no guts to oppose the homosexual movement. Probably 10% of the population is either homosexual or at least sympathetic toward the homosexual militant movement. As a boy, I had to fight off homosexual fellow students and men who shadowed me. Fortunatly, I was a reasonably able fighter. People believe homosexuals are the bent-wrist, florid, effeminate types. This is not true. While in the armed forces, I saw men who were built like prize-fighters and was stunned when they propositioned me. The homosexual stereotype of effeminancy is true only in a small percentage of homosexuals. We need to hit back not by means of overt physical violence -- although young men need to learn how to fend off the more aggressive and insolent "gays." When it is now a state mandate that children in the public schools be brainwashed to accept homosexuality as normal, then it is time for war. Christians need to walk out of all public schools and colleges. There is no longer any reason for us to be there. Passivity will embolden the homosexuals and make them even more aggressive. Whenever you try to evade your enemy, he will pursue you all the more. Remember the ancient Roman saying, Væ victis (Woe to the conquered). Anonymous |
