JUNE 2001 LETTERS
IMAGINE THE COOL CHILDREN I read the article "San Diegans Confess" in the May, 2001 issue first with surprise, then concern, then stupefaction. Two of the 17 persons interviewed seem to have a clear sense of the sacrament of Reconciliation. And to what religion are the others bound? I am stunned by the laissez-faire, so-what, amused take most of these "Catholics" have on the sacrament. If they are so unconcerned, so blasé about the possibility of sacriligeous Communion, it's no wonder the Church is in such a state. Our hierarchy from the top down to a mostly indifferent clergy has seriously botched catechesis. Can you imagine the children these it's-cool-man Amchurch-goers are raising? I had to recite a Divine Mercy chaplet for these nearly lost souls and heartily recommend that they read and reflect on Psalms I and II daily. Miserere nobis, Domine.... Harry Wade Kudos to the writer of "Constructive" in the April "Letters" to News Notes, referring to February survey results. Only recently have I learned that News Notes was in the forefront with an idea now being pursued in a similar undertaking by the U.S. bishops at the national level. Keep up the good work! One would only hope that the results of this excellent survey would be read, pondered, and used by those in authority to promote the best in worship -- not only in music, but in all aspects of a restoration of the sacred -- exterior and interior of church buildings -- where the Blessed Sacrament can be found and adored. The attack on your "editorial judgement" by the writer of "Dumb" is without justification. How can someone who admittedly comes from inside one choir be in a position to level such charges at a journalistic effort? Shouldn't our Catholic worship always offer the best we can possibly bring to Him whose perfect sacrifice is re-presented on the altar in every Mass? Marty Fisher Re "Parkinson's Miracle Cure Turns into a Catastrophe," April News Notes: What a horror story about the disastrous results of the Parkinson's experiments. Has it occurred to anyone that using cells from aborted babies is something that even a patient God might not put up with? Laurette Elsberry Your newspaper has always been a champion in the field of pro-life Catholic principles in condemning abortion in all forms -- from contraception to late-term abortion -- and all the different methods in-between. For women the post-abortion clinics and healing of mind and soul are thorougly expounded on. There is one aspect that I have never seen much in News Notes and that is the sinful practice of having a vasectomy performed. This practice is promoted as safe, cheap, and effective birth control. There are thousands of good Catholic men in San Diego County that have had this procedure done to them. It is easy for women to amend their ways after realizing the error of birth-control pills and other methods -- just stop their practice, become celibate, or have more children if it be God's will. With men it's a different and more difficult process to come back to traditional teachings of the Church. With men it means a vasectomy reversal to come back into sanctifying grace. I personally have been forgiven for my sin of that contraceptive procedure on several occasions in the confessional, but my restitution to make myself whole and pleasing to God is empty and sacrilegious unless a reversal is performed. We can be forgiven for a grave sin only if we undo the harm it has caused. Please give me references to qualified doctors who are pro-life-minded and have a good track record of success with with vasectomy reversal. A huge step in the right direction would be a vasectomy reversal referral service posted in your newspaper giving interested men a list of doctors, their success rates, and monetary charges. Since we are so close to the border, a referral to competent doctors in Mexico would be an option for those financially strapped. The fees in San Diego for the procedure are from $4-10,000.
