IF CONDOM BREAKS

This Hispanic does not give a thumbs-up to the "Pro-lifers" ... yet. I hope they have educated themselves enough to support the Morning-After Pill.

If not, please allow me. It is not RU-486, it is not an abortion pill, and it does not end pregnancy. It is a higher dose of the familiar birth-control pill. It can suppress ovulation (stops the woman's egg from dropping into the uterus, where it could become fertile).

It is most effective if taken within 72 hours after intercourse. It is emergency contraception only and should not take the place of regular birth control methods. However if an accident happens, i.e. condom breaks or she forgot to take her pill, a family doctor or Planned Parenthood should be able to help obtain the morning-after pill.

I hope pro-lifers will include signs to also give out this information It is an alternative that we all can agree on.

Manuel Eduardo Ugalde
via email

Editor: To answer Mr. Ugalde's letter, we turned to Anne Fitch-Dececchi, RN, Fitch Fertility Center, San Diego. She writes:

"If a woman has intercourse, the sperm can fertilize an egg ovulated up to three days afterwards. This means the conception of a new baby in the fallopian tube. Then this new baby travels down through the proximal end of the tube and into the uterus, where it implants within about 7 to 10 days.

"Taking the emergency morning-after pill after this act of intercourse may delay ovulation or impair the transportation of the sperm to the egg, thus preventing conception. But if conception has already occurred, which can occur anytime from a few hours to about three days after intercourse the other action of this morning-after packet is to alter the lining of the uterus so that implantation of the embryo can't occur. This is the abortifacient action.

"There is no way for a woman to know, at the time she takes these pills, whether or not she has already conceived. Therefore there is always the risk that a new life will be destroyed."

WHAT SCARES ME MOST

I read Allyson Smith's article "Abortion Priest." What scares me most about this article is not the fact that he's an ex-priest giving speeches at Planned Parenthood, but the fact that he's allowed to spread his poison by teaching at so called "Catholic Universities" such as Marquette and Notre Dame. This tells the reader exactly how corrupt these universities are! How can they continue to poison the students' faith and still say they are Catholic???
