CATHOLIC FAN OF CREATION MUSEUMNews Notes did a service in the article on the planned exhibit at the Museum of Man in discussing the Museum of Creation and Earth History [See "Two Creation Museums," September]. Educational TV programs bombard us with evolution as a scientifically proven fact. Hollywood has grossly distorted the Scopes trial regarding "teaching evolution." (Scopes in his autobiography goes as far to admit, "To tell the truth, I wasn't sure I had taught evolution.") The media has succeeded in demonizing the members of the Kansas Board of Education (who were then defeated in the Republican primary election) when they objected to evolution being promoted as a "unifying concept and process" for all science. Pope John Paul II is potrayed as being in the evolution camp. Thus in the National Catholic Register, an interviewer asks in part, "Many Catholics, I find, are not aware that the Pope has embraced scientific evidence and tells us that it is perfectly acceptable to believe in evolution as long as we understand that God is responsible...." News Notes quotes George Sim Johnson's book on evolution as saying the Pope was calling evolution "more than a hypothesis." But when Catholic sources were contacted, Henry Morris in "Defending the Faith" indicates they confirmed it was "more that just a theory." Irrespective, it seems OK for Catholics to believe in an evolution guided by God who creates the soul. If evolution is true, why burden the process by adding a God? A God who incidentally chooses a long chaotic process with much suffering and death to arrive at man. Then He turns around and sends His Son to take human nature, suffer, and die. Thus "theistic evolutionists" believe that suffering and death are not related to sin? Not my God! Fortunately there is sufficient scientific evidence that evolution fails. Neither evolution nor creationism can be "proven," but the data can be evaluated to see which fits better, thus the lack of transitional fossils and the Second Law of Thermodynamics favors creationism. The eruption of Mt. Saint Helens in May, 1980 has shown that geologic processes may occur in months which would have been believed to take thousands of years. The entire issue of dating geological events is now being reevaluated as different techniques give conflicting dates or conflict with known historically dated events. The creation museum has exhibits dealing with stars, the age of the earth, the ice age, Noah's Ark, and much more. For those interested in more detail there are leaflets on the different topics. For those who are interested in an introductory book, a reviewer in the Creation Research Society Quarterly recommended Creation Rediscovered: Evolution and the Importance of the Origins Debate by Gerard J. Keane (Tan) for those wanting a Catholic perspective. Frank Grabarits, M.D., Ph.D. On October 6 in the San Diego Union-Tribune, journalist Logan Jenkins gave a "bouquet" to Susan Hartley, county school board candidate, for having state heavyweight, Delaine Eastin, state school superintendant, and state senator Dede Alpert of San Diego at Hartley's campaign kick-off. The campaign was identified as a "secular" crusade against extremism. Susan Fay, the 5th district county school board incumbent, is the feared extremist. If he had time, President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, would be national heavyweights for Susan Fay. She is their kind of person. Wise public servants do not accept government grants without knowing what strings are attached to them. Susan supports the president's efforts. Schools are for the study of scholastic subjects, not the promotion of homosexuality and same-sex marriage from kindergarten through 12th grade in every subject according to AB 537. These state "heavies" are aftraid a conservative majority on the county board would rock their boat, which has not proven to accomplish educational goals. Citizens, please note. Sue Hartley's campaign does not acquaint us with any personal qualifications. She always just criticizes Susan Fay. Betty Mettee |
