DECEMBER 2000 LETTERS
ODDBALL?Thank you for News Notes. It does my heart good to note your serious, no-nonsense attitude. As an Orthodox Jew, I am frankly envious of local Catholics who get straight talk from your publication. Our local Jewish Times is quite liberal, pro-Clinton, pro-Barak. What can I tell you? San Diego Orthodox Jews have little to say about anything controversial. Perhaps I'm just an "oddball" to even mention it. Name withheld I write regarding the letter to the editor regarding Dominus Iesus which was not published in your paper, but in the Southern Cross [See Letters, November 2000, "Two Options For Monsignor Mikulanis"]. Why would you publish a letter to the editor in your paper when the original article to which the letter to the editor resonds was in another paper? The letter was caustic at best. It belonged in the Southern Cross which published the article, not in News Notes for whom the article was not written. This is reminiscent of Tim Ryland's editorship wherein the paper declined considerably. It was on the way back. I'm not sure now. Fr. Richard Perozich I noticed the ad on page 14 of this month's issue (November, 2000). Sheila Kippley is promoting her book, Breast Feeding and Natural Child Spacing. She is with Couple to Couple League. I first found out about the League in the American Life League magazine quite a while ago. I contacted the League because I noticed they have a book out called Fertility Cycles and Nutrition. Around November of 1998, I read an article in the League's magazine by some so-called doctor stating that babies who are not breast-fed are sick and stupid and unwanted and unloved. All of these statements are unsulting to people who are adopted and are not breast-fed. I was not adopted, but I have friends who are and they are not sick, stupid, unwanted, or unloved. I can understand Sheila Kippley and her husband promoting breastfeeding because it is a little better that bottle feeding, but they don't have to be nasty and mean about it. The Kippleys also tell people that they should never leave a child under 3 with anyone except in an emergency. Nonsense. I always enjoyed doing some occasional babysitting for my nieces and nephews when they were small. I don't think parents should leave their children at daycare centers 40 hours a week, like some do, but I can't change the world. I wish you would not advertize anything by the Kippleys, but I suppose I can't change that either. They sound like controlling idiots to me. Name withheld Have you ever thought of doing a survey on the number of churches that have a daily evening Mass? The clergy has all but eliminated daily evening Masses. They say there are too few who would I attend. I feel this is an excuse! Only St. Joseph's Cathedral offers one at 5:15 p.m. and Our Lady of Guadalupe offers a daily 7:30 p.m. Between 25 and 50 attend every night. It helps families and the elderly to go in the p.m. If there are no priests, of a shortage thereof, then at least one Mass in the north coastal and one in north inland offered for those who work and cannot make an early a.m. Mass should be scheduled. I drive 50 miles round-trip to either St. Joseph's or Our Lady of Guadalupe daily. Since the old-time monsignors have retired, where p.m. Masses were offered daily, their replacements cancelled the p.m. schedules as soon as they took over. Examples: Mary Star of the Sea, La Jolla and St. John's, Encinitas, Requests to priests are ignored. How do these priests think they are fulfilling the spiritual needs of the flock? If even Bishop Brom would ask some parish in North County to volunteer to have an evening Mass, it would greatly benefit those souls who hunger for God. I love News Notes. It is a great paper. Clare Hunter How about an article on Confession? Where confession is heard in the confessional, not in the sacristy or Reconciliation Room, and which churches still have confessionals. Also at what time confessions are heard. Most places 4 or 4:30 p.m. Great for the priest to put in a little work before dinner. But what about the people that have to prepare dinner? Why not have a place that does confessions at 2 p.m.? (Please do not use my name or my next penance will be too stiff!) Name withheld At the root of this Gay Teen Couples Affirming display (See "No Accident," November News Notes) is the destruction of the 1st and the 5th amendments. When a people do not have the ability to complain to the government to solve a problem, those people will lose due process to protect a citizen's life, liberty and property. Martin Luther King Jr., mobilized the Church and brought the U.S. civil government to its knees because he was protected by the 1st and 5th amendments. Today some 35 years later, we find educators like the principal of Mt. Miguel, Martin Griffin, despise the 1st and 5th amendments and hide behind orwellian and totalitarian language abusing fellow citizens with an accusation of "Hate Speech." Teachers who want to complain to Griffin about the Gay Teen Affirming Display can only shut up. Tragically, all the bills supporting Gay Affirming Couples and the gay agenda in the California State Assembly are gag orders and censorship. The people who sponsored this Gay Teen Affirming admit in their Shared Heart website that gays are 3 to 7 times more likely to commit suicide than heterosexual kids plus they suffer from sexually transmitted disease at a much higher rate than heterosexual children and they suffer from drug abuse at a much higher rate than heterosexual kids. Griffin noted, "But we have to remember that as a school we can't make a moral judgment." He approved the Gay Teen Affirming display, THAT IS A MORAL JUDGMENT! His judgment is he wants to normalize the abnormal and place gag orders on moms and dads who would plead that he not lead their children into the horror of homosexuality. As a kid I learned the difference between principle and principal because a principal ends in pal and he is always "a pal." Principal Griffin is no pal to any of us, kids or parents. Why does he sponsor a program that encourages kids to enter a lifestyle that leads to 3-7 times higher chance of suicide, sexually transmitted diseases and drug abuse? Moms, dads, get involved with Christian Men United. You have nothing to lose but the abuse of men like Principal Griffin. Shamgar Jabez |
