December 1999 LETTERS
MORMON WEBSITE The article on the prolife position of the LDS (October) was very interesting. I called the Lighthouse about a copy [of Gospel Principles] and they said the church guards it pretty closely. They did however give me the name of a site to download the Handbook of General Instructions: http://www.xenu.netizen.com.au/lds/. I thought you might like to get a copy. Keep up the good work. --Paul Farley It's a shame that your writers who nosed around Alpine gathering "dirt" on the two sisters, Sr. Pat Hanson and Sr. Millie Peaslee (September News Notes), did not live back in the middle ages. Then your writers might have seen some results of their snooping. Perhaps even bringing us an "auto de fe" (otherwise known as a burning at the stake), for their supposed deviation from that narrow path which ultra conservatives set forth for us to follow. But, no, we live in the last half of the Twentieth Century, thank God, and heresy hunters are not really popular in most circles. The sisters that you cast aspirations on have together given over 110 years of service to our Church, much of it in teaching. Now they are doing other kinds of work, which you call "new age," a popular catchall for most things new in the Church now. Our Sisters are well-liked and appreciated in this parish and have surely not set off any movement towards "new-ageism." The work they have done with St. Vincent de Paul people has been marvelous and helped a number of them, bringing some back to the Church they left years ago. It is "by their fruits ye will know them." No, they are not doing dangerous things, but modern things and are interested in a number of things, like social justice, protecting the environment, and the death penalty. But why did you include so many others, priests, sisters and laity in these articles? Most merely know and like the sisters personally as I do. You took a tar brush to people, some of who merely gave them money or lent their names to a program. As for Father Matt Spahr, the pastor of Queen of Angels, most of us would say he did us all a big favor by having the sisters conduct programs and join into the life of this very vital and growing parish in Alpine. We are blessed to have these wonderful ladies/nuns in our midst! Gael Ralph On page 8 of the November issue of News Notes there is a picture of Fr. Vince Lorenz with the name "Byrnes" beneath it. Fr. Vince is the chaplain for the San Diego chapter of the Knights of Columbus as well. He keeps himself very busy! Gary D. Stahler President, San Diego Chapter Catholic League |
