FAMOUS NEWS NOTES FAN

I read San Diego News Notes religiously. You are doing great work. Never be discouraged. You are doing God’s work.

WASTED YOUTH

Mark Twain said it best when he said “Youth is wasted on the young.” No better example of this statement was when I read about the “Youth Pride Festival” and the celebration of homosexual behavior. [see “Proclamation of Shame,” and ‘Better to Have a Millstone,’ June 2004]. Being young and not knowing better is a problem with youth, but what is the excuse for the City Council of San Diego in proclaiming “San Diego Youth Pride Day?” Seems like both the young and the old in San Diego do not know what sinful behavior is about!

PROUD AT HOLY CROSS

You had a great article on Jennie Gomez [“Who Me?” July/August 2004], who was a member of the choir of our traditional Latin Mass at Holy Cross Chapel. Some of us wonder how many other congregations have had three religious candidates within a two-year period? Also, considering that we are a small number compared to most other parishes, we like to think that the Immemorial Mass is the answer to these vocations. It would be interesting to hear from other parishes, (although we at Holy Cross are not an official parish,) to find out how many of their flock have entered the religious in the past couple years.

BISHOPS AND DEMOCRATS

After reading about the decision of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops not to refuse Holy Communion to pro-abortion politicians I got to thinking about the possibility that their decision might have been different if the pro-abortion politicians were Republicans and the pro-life politicians were Democrats. Just wondering. It seems to me that their decision was a very political one. It gives a clear message that there is nothing wrong voting for pro-abortion politicians, in other words, Democrats. After all it was the Catholic vote that put Clinton in the White House for two terms. As I recall on the Feast of the Annunciation he told us that our tax dollars would be used to pay for the abortions of women in the service.

DENIGRATED THE GOVERNATOR

As a Byzantine Rite Catholic, I was pleased to see the article written about another Eastern Rite Church, St Ephrem’s Maronite Catholic Church (“The Meaning of Our Shrine,” July/August 2004) September in your most recent edition of News Notes. It was most informative. However, I was appalled to see the brief article about Governor Schwarzenegger refer to his making the “Sign of the Cross backwards” (Little Notes, July/August 2004) and Dan O’Connell indicating that he saw the Governor do this twice. To add insult to injury, Bernie Tittmann added that the “governor probably doesn’t know any better.” I would not presume to judge the Governor’s religious persuasion although he has indicated that he is a Catholic. Austria borders Slovakia, home to many Byzantine Rite Catholics and marriage between Eastern and Roman rite Catholics would not be unusual. Should you visit any of the Byzantine Catholic churches in San Diego, Ruthenian, Melkite or Ukrainian, you would note that many times during the liturgy, the parishioners cross themselves from right to left, with great devotion. If you wish to be critical of the Governor, that is your right, but you are in error in selecting and denigrating the way in which he made the Sign of the Cross at President Reagan’s funeral.
