DE LALLA IS NO THEOLOGIAN
In the Letters section of the the June issue of News Notes, Mr. De Lalla says he's no theologian. Very true. He says the Charismatic Renewal is a novelty, stating it's Protestant, and scoffing at the Holy Spirit speaking in tongues and to the congregation.
Mr. De Lalla needs to read scripture: Acts of the Apostles 10:41-48, along with Corinthians 14 -- all very Catholic and traditional.
The charisms were dropped for 17 centuries because of the emergence of illuminism, plus heresies that crept in. Scripture intructs us to test every spirit. Not everyone did, or does. It's a great responsibility and vital that Catholics understand this. Spiritual direction is needed, and an understanding of Charismatic theology. The three theological virtues, four cardinal virtues, and all seven gifts of the Holy Spirit need to be operating.
Vatican II instructed us, the laity, to take upon ourselves the study of church history, scripture, et al.
Sincerely,
Doris Lane Campo
BRAVO MENDOZA
I'm writing to congratulate Luis Mendoza for his dedication to the cause of life. (Adopt an Abortionist, by Robert Kumpel, June 2006). Mr. Mendoza's story reminds us all that there are three victims in every abortion: the baby, the mother, and the doctor. (Count the medical assistant or nurse and you've got four victims.) In reaching out to that young doctor and turning him away from abortion, Mr. Mendoza not only saved the lives of future babies the doctor may have killed, but he possibly saved the doctor's soul. His story serves as a lesson to all of us who long to see the end of abortion: God's love can reach the hearts not only of mothers considering abortion but the hearts of everyone involved in this horrible phenomenon, if only we take the time and make the effort to model God's love to these people.
The story also serves as a playbook for pro-life groups everywhere. Try to get to know your local abortionist. Let him know that the love you feel for these babies you also feel for him. After all, he is a child of God just like they are. Be persistent, just as God's love is persistent. If abortion is the horrible travesty we believe it to be, then the doctors performing abortions (and their assistants) must be causing enormous damage to their souls. Pretty soon, they're going to need a shoulder to cry on. We, as pro-lifers, need to offer our shoulders. And, just as we show mothers that there is a way out having abortions, we need to show abortionists that there is a way out of performing them. Thank you, Mr. Mendoza, for blazing that trail.
