QUEEN MARGOT

Directed by Patrice Chereau. Starring Isabelle Adjani, Daniel Auteuil, Vincent Perez. French with English subtitles, 144 minutes, color, 1994. Available at Kensington Video

Ernie: The centerpiece of the movie is as massacre of Protestants, but the reason for it is ill-explained. It's passed off as the king trying to cover himself, without religious motivation. In reality, it was a time of high religious fervor. The early-Reformation Protestants were motivated by religious zeal. But this movie made the conflict between them and the Catholics to be nothing more than an us-versus-them struggle. There's never any theological beliefs mixed in at all. There's never even any religious conviction displayed.

Matthew: There are the Catholic and Protestant who start the film sleeping in the same bed and end it sleeping in death side by side. Isn't there a theme there worth chatting about.? The night of the massacre, they try to kill each other. Later, the Catholic realizes his participation in the slaughter was wrong. And when he sees the Protestant alive, he begs him for absolution and they become friends. Is as if they've spent their hate on each other and are now healed through each other.

Ernie: I agree it was an interesting idea that could be expounded on film. But the way it was presented, it came across as pseudo-poetic drivel.
