TALK ABOUT MOVIES May 2003
ABOUT A BOYDirected by Chris Weitz, Paul Weitz. Starring Hugh Grant, Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette. 2002, 101 minutes, Color, English, UK/USA/France/Germany. Available at Blockbuster Video. Matthew: When Will rejects the notion that no man is an island, he makes the case that it's possible to live life without exercising charity. He's reached a point that a lot of people dream about -- he doesn't have to do anything, and so he does almost nothing. But then, when he wants to matter to someone else, he finds there's nothing there. Ernie: He's a poster boy for Maxim magazine, all stuff and chicks and spending on oneself. * * * Ernie: The kid -- Marcus -- comes over and does almost nothing; he just injects himself into Will's meaningless afternoon television. Will grumbles about it, but just the fact of Marcus starts to grow on him. When he's feeling worthless, and he's got his head on the floor and then he hears the doorbell, he thinks maybe it's Marcus, and he's ecstatic about it. It's something other than just him and his gadgets and his life. Matthew: When he tries to save the kid, he's still hanging on to the idea that we are islands. He says "you can't make your mom happy. You've got to make yourself happy." But the kid doesn't listen to him. He goes out and crucifies himself.
