Household Saints

1993 Directed by Nancy Savoca. Starring Tracey Ullman, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lili Taylor. Not for children. Available at Kensington Video

Matthew: When Enzo says, "Man deals, and God stacks the deck," I thought that was the theme of the whole movie. God operates where He will and how He will. Ernie: When you hear the idea of God cheating, tipping the scales, it's kind of repugnant. But then, that's what he does, isn't it? He deals the cards as he would have them, not as they would randomly turn up.

Matthew: Theresa wanted to be a nun, but what God wanted her to do was iron Leonard's shirt -- "grooming one of My lambs." Ernie: Nicky complains how Joe twists things his way, while he accepts his fate. But that proves not to be the case. Not only does Nicky want something else, he wants something utterly different from what God has given him. Joe cheats at the scales in his butcher shop, but he accepts his lot in life. Matthew: Joe cheats on a small scale, but not on the grand scale.

Ernie: When things didn't go Mama Santangelo's way, she burned the icon of St. Anne. Prayer was a way to get what she wanted. Matthew: That's why, when the flowers bloom when she dies, it's through human effort, and when the flowers bloom at Theresa's death, it's a miracle.
