THE MATRIX

Directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski. Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss. 1999, 136 minutes, USA, English, Color. Available at Blockbuster Video.

Matthew: I think Neo is Moses, not Jesus. Like Moses, he's called by someone else. He's hesitant to accept. And if he fulfills the prophecy and destroys the Matrix, he's not going to be leading his people into heaven. They're going to be left in the nightmarish "desert of the real," where people have to live underground to survive. And some people will even want to go back to bondage, to their fleshpots. And there's also a kind of Old Testament willingness to use horrific violence.

Ernie: Still, Christ means "anointed one," and Neo is that. Morpheus is a very distinct John the Baptist figure. He's a prophet, but as great as he is, he's always looking for the One greater than himself who will destroy the Matrix. And once Neo figures out who he is, he becomes Godlike.

Matthew: He can manipulate the Matrix world as he sees fit.

Ernie: And by the end, he even conquers death.

Matthew: Love conquers death. When Trinity says she loves him, he comes back to life. When the Oracle says he's not the One, that he's waiting for something, that's what he's waiting for.

Ernie: Though it's a pretty limited view of love.

Matthew: Smooching.
