THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS

Directed by Peter Jackson. Starring Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen. 179 minutes, Color, English, 2002, USA/New Zealand. Available at Blockbuster Video.

Ernie: I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding of what the virtuous man is, or else a belief that such a man does not exist. Aragorn is portrayed as confused and rash. Faramir is completely inconsistent. Matthew: It's as if everyone has to be terribly conflicted, or else it's not real. Ernie: It's supposed to be the free people of the world united in a common cause despite their differences. When everyone has his own little internal struggle, it gets too convoluted.

Ernie: The point of the Ents is that even though they are slow and contemplative and tend to regard the travails of the world as passing seasons, they realize that the evil of the world has risen to such a point where they are moved to act. Matthew: Here, it's just, 'You messed with my friends the trees; I'm going to mess with you." Ernie: It's as if good comes only from passion.

Matthew: Smeagol was handled well. I liked that his evil desire for the ring had taken him over to the point where he identified himself with it -- he had forgotten his own name. It's a lovely image of redemption when Frodo says his name; he's calling him back to what he really is.
