JUNE 2002 LITTLE NOTES

PLANNED PARENTHOOD'S April 20th home-tour fundraiser in Golden Hill brought pro-life supporters from around the county. 40 to 50 Catholics prayed the rosary before enormous prints of the Divine Mercy image and the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The prayer vigil took place in the parking lot of Holy Family Friary, a Byzantine/Franciscan monastery located at the corner of 22nd and C Streets, in the middle of the home tour. Father Sergius-Maria, the friary's prior: "Part of our apostolate is pro-life and Pat came and asked if she could use the parking lot."

Golden Hill resident Pat Martin was unable to get the exact hours of the home tour, so she decided to have the vigil between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.. "Luckily, the tour started around 10 and ended around 3. I tried to get other denominations, and up until the last minute we never got an answer. My plan was to have the rosary and the chaplet and prayers from other denominations, but it turned out that we prayed the complete rosary -- all fifteen decades -- the chaplet of mercy and readings from the Bible and then took a break. We did that three times and then the last half hour, we prayed five more decades."

Martin brought thirty chairs which, facing the images, were placed under a large tent. There were also large banners around the lot: "Pray for the Protection of the Preborn Babies" and "Pray for Millions Who Have Died from Abortions." "People kept coming and going throughout the day. We consistently had forty to fifty people there at once, so I would guess that altogether about 250 people showed up. Many brought their own chairs."

THE MAY 7 EDITION of the San Diego Union-Tribune included a full-page four-color advertisement for the University of San Diego, touting the achievements of five "distinguished" graduates slated to receive the Author E. Hughes Career Achievement Awards on May 11. One of the recipients, Lynn Schenk, had a biographical sketch that read: "A former member of the House of Representatives and currently chief of staff and senior policy advisor to Governor Gray Davis, Lynn Schenk has worked throughout her political career to advance women's rights, transportation improvements and environmental issues." Schenk voted 100 percent pro-abortion while in Congress.

AMONG "CATHOLIC" POLITICIANS endorsed by Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties in 2002 are California governor Gray Davis, state assemblyman and former Jesuit seminarian Juan Vargas, and city councilman Ralph Inzunza, who regularly attends Mass at downtown's St. Joseph Cathedral. According to the Spring, 2002 issue of PPSDRC's newsletter, Choice Words, "When more than one candidate is 100% pro-choice, we turn to other factors. We will always endorse a pro-choice incumbent--since he has already proved himself in office, he deserves our continued support. If the race in question is an open seat -- no incumbent is trying to get re-elected -- we consider the candidates' viability." The Action Fund is proudly supporting the following candidates:

DURING THE MAY 3-5 CELEBRATION of the closing of Family Planning Associates abortion clinic in La Mesa, Cheryl Sullenger of California Life Coalition listed 15 clinics that have closed since 1987:

1.) Birth Control Institute, 4228 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego. Closed in 1987 after intense picketing by Bible Missionary Fellowship. Today, this building houses a pediatrician

2.) 150 W. Washington,San Diego. Several abortionists killed babies in this building, all of whom have since quit or retired. Today, this building is abortion-free.

3.) Office of Benjamin Fiorica, 3444 Kearny Villa Rd. #400, San Diego. Once listed as one of San Diego's prominent abortion offices, Fiorica quit sometime after 1993.

4.) Amhad Mehran and Michael C. Wong, 6244 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego. Mehran quit after 1993. Wong moved.

5.) Clinica El Norte (Suresh Gandotra), 342 W. San Ysidro Blvd., San Ysidro. This mill closed after Suresh Gandotra killed a young mother during an abortion. He fled the country to avoid murder charges.

6.) Rand, Schonbrun, Spector, Strauss 304 Ivy, San Diego. This building was sold after years of picketing and Operation Rescue's "Tour of Shame" conducted during the 1996 Republican National Convention.

7.) Donald Bynes, 3330 Third Ave., San Diego. Late-term baby-killer Byrnes closed his office after years of picketing, a major rescue in the early 1990s, the 1996 Operation Rescue Tour of Shame, and a house picket.

8.) A Lady's Doctor (Philip Milgram), Mississippi and Meade, San Diego. Abortionist Milgram sold his practice and moved out of town after a year of picketing by Connie Youngkin and neighborhood pickets.

A Lady's Doctor (Philip Milgram), El Norte Shopping Center on H St., Chula Vista. Milgram sold both offices to a doctor who does not perform abortions

9.) Office of Jack Dym, 5565 Grossmont Center Dr., La Mesa (Also former office of Donald Byrnes). Dym closed his office and moved out of town after his house was picketed. He cited pressure from the anti-abortionists as his reason for leaving town.

10.) Office of David Priver, 1307 Rosecrans St., San Diego. After a letter in 1993 from pro-lifers, Priver wrote and said that he was very proud of what he does for a living and that we could picket him any time -- and so we did. He closed this office. He sold his Point Loma home and moved into a condominium high rise downtown (see next entry).

San Diego Women's Medical Clinic (David Priver), 3405 Kenyon, San Diego. Priver closed this office sometime after the Republican Convention in 1996 for alleged financial concerns and moved into Michael Wong's existing clinic.

11.) WomanCare was a feminist women's health center that was media mouthpiece for abortion on demand in San Diego. Clinic director Deborah Fleming built Womancare into a successful and profitable business. In 1990, depressed over the death of her newborn child that had been conceived by "woman controlled conception," she drove to Yuma, bought a gun, and committed suicide in a motel room. Ashley Phillips took over, expanded into Chula Vista, opening "Womancare South."

WomanCare South, 688-B Hollister, Chula Vista. The Catholic group that had picketed El Norte in San Ysidro moved their efforts here. This mill closed within a year of opening due to financial concerns, in 1996.

12.) WomanCare, 2850 6th Ave. San Diego. Womancare began underpaying their rent on 6th Avenue and soon incurred $60,000 in debt for unpaid rent. Prior to the Republican Convention, Womancare went on a media blitz, claiming to be the Number One target of Operation Rescue. Womancare incurred $30,000 in debt for security, causing Phillips to draw criticism from her supporters. The owners evicted WomanCare.

13.) Womancare, 2250 4th Ave., San Diego. WomanCare relocated to a smaller office on 4th Avenue. Womancare sold out to Planned Parenthood for the cost of their debt. PP kept the mill open for a few months, then closed it for good in 1998.

14.) Clinica Medica Para La Mujer De Hoy (Nicholas Braemer), 335 H St., Chula Vista. Braemer opened this mill in the late '90s, hiring 83-year-old Phillip Rand to abort there. In August 2000, Braemer lost his medical license -- the third Clinica Medica abortionist to do so. Members from Catholic groups, Bayview Presbyterian Church, and Phil Magnan's Lifesource adopted the Chula Vista mill and maintained a presence there. This Wednesday (May 1), Phil called me from the mill and asked if something had happened. According to the Clinica Medica main office, they had desired to stay open but could not find a location. In the meantime, the Chula Vista clinic is closed.

15.) Family Planning Associates, 8881 Fletcher Parkway in La Mesa. Forced out with no place to go. They are holding over but must move or close soon.

FROM A MAY 8 REUTERS STORY (ROME): "The Italian fertility expert whose avowed aim is to create the first human clone, said Wednesday three women were pregnant with clones, but complained that the babies would be viewed as freaks by a hostile society. Severino Antinori called himself the "cultural and scientific co-ordinator" of the top secret cloning projects, and said one of the pregnancies was in the 10th week, one in the seventh and one in the sixth.

"'One thing is certain, in the country where these babies will be born, if the climate of persecution does not change ... at the first birth everyone will say "This is a monster",' the white-haired Antinori told a news conference."

IN 2001 PLANNED PARENTHOOD of San Diego and Riverside Counties "became the largest Planned Parenthood affiliate in the country," according to an article by president and CEO Mark Salo published in the Spring 2002 issue of Planned Parenthood's newsletter.

"In 2001," wrote Salo, "we opened our first Express clinic in Mission Valley, and it has met with great success -- so much so that we will open Express clinics in Pacific Beach and Moreno Valley this year. We will also expand our Riverside facility, move our Pacific Beach and Mission Valley centers to larger buildings, and begin providing services in Imperial County."

According to the local PP website, "Our Pacific Beach clinic (at Thomas Ave. and Ingraham St.) is being renovated and will re-open as an Express Clinic. Current Pacific Beach ... patients requiring more in-depth services will be transferred to the new Mission Bay facility." The new clinic will open at 4501 Mission Bay Drive at the beginning of June.

The local Planned Parenthood has not been content to confine its activities to Southern California. "Last year ... we received a $100,000 grant to continue our Global Partners program. Through this program we have developed relationships with two reproductive healthcare agencies in the Philippines, an eye-opening experience that has strengthened our resolve to help make family planning services available to all who want them, regardless of what country they live in."

In a newsletter article titled "Who are Planned Parenthood's Allies?" board chairman Harry Carter wrote about a talk on San Diego County's smart-growth plan given to PP board members in January by Mike McLaughlin of the San Diego Association of Governments (sandag). In the article Carter wrote, "The greatest threat to the environment is overpopulation, and the greatest cause of overpopulation is lack of access to birth control. Family planning is the solution."

THE ALPINE PLANNING GROUP has voted 11-0 to send the Queen of Angels church expansion plan back for more study. According to a May 2 report in the Alpine Sun, "This time the studies will require traffic, soils investigation including septic systems, nitrate study, lighting, noise, a driveway on the east side converted to gated emergency, and the overall size and bulk of the project."

Residents who spoke before the group in support of the project included real estate broker and Queen of Angels building committee member Mary Hills and Rev. Abigail Byrd of Good Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, who said that the new church building "adds character to the town."

Opponents, however, objected to the new church building on the grounds that "the proposed expansion was too much for their neighborhood." Church neighbor Victor Talavera said, "This church is welcome, but it's completely out of scale."

THE ULTIMATE MOTHER'S DAY GIFT. From a May 7 press release: "Tom Anderson, a pioneer in haptics (touch) technology, and CEO of Novint Technologies, Inc, a development partner of Manhattan Scientifics, Inc. announced today the creation of a new prenatal e-Touch technology that allows parents' unprecedented interaction with their unborn child by providing the ability to touch the child's virtual image. In honor of Mother's Day, Anderson will unveil the innovative 3-D ultrasound touch system at New Mexico Sonographics, a medical facility located in Albuquerque, NM later this week. The scans are taken on the GE Voluson 730 system, which is based on standard ultrasound and is therefore safe for mother and child. e-Touch, a brand identity for Novint, allows the user to feel a vast array of textures including the feel of the baby's face and skin by using a special computer mouse which registers the contact and creates the sensation of touch, which is transmitted through the user's hand.

"Tom Anderson and his wife Kari are expecting their first child in July of this year, and he has used the technology to virtually meet his own son. 'I have touched my son's cheek, and he is not born yet! It was such an incredible moment to touch him for the first time -- I remember the experience clearly and will never forget it. I know what my son's face looks like, and I have spent hours already touching his nose and lips and face, discovering all of his features.' Jan Easton Carrasco, co-founder of New Mexico Sonographics, said, 'This service is affordable to many parents, costing around $250 for an exam, well worth the cost to many for the peace of mind and the experience it brings.' A 3D ultrasound scan is taken of the baby, where a parent can see what the baby looks like. These images are then loaded into the e-Touch software where a parent can see the baby from any direction, including straight on or from his or her profile. For more information: Manhattan Scientifics, Inc., 214-675-8033."

CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL on March 21 decided to dis-invite Planned Parenthood from providing "expert" help in the CHS freshman health class. This was after a Coronado parent pointed out to trustees the off-color PP website for teens and the conflict of bringing a cash-for-service group into the classrooms. This was all resported in the May News Notes. What wasn't reported was the parent's real name -- John Bowen. For more information re Planned Parenthood in the schools, call Bowen at 619-435-4875 or email him, bowen@adnc.com.

THE APRIL 21 BULLETIN at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in City Heights included the following:

"Postures And Gestures At Mass: When the Holy Father issued the new General Instructions to the Roman Missal which tell us how to celebrate the Mass, a few changes in posture and gestures were made.

"Sign Of The Cross: Upon entering the church, the faithful are encouraged to take water from the font and sign themselves with the cross.

Genuflection is the bending of the right knee to touch the floor, a sign of adoration. Catholics should genuflect when they enter the church, and when they leave the church if the tabernacle is present in the sanctuary as it is in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart; also anytime they pass in front of a tabernacle when Mass is not being celebrated.

A bow has two forms, simple and profound. A simple bow is the bending of the head at the neck. A profound bow is a bending at the waist. A profound bow is done upon entering the church when the tabernacle is NOT present in the sanctuary. A profound bow is done by all at Mass during the creed at the words, "by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary and became man." A simple bow of the head is done just before the person receives the Body or the Blood of the Lord from the minister.

"Kneeling: The faithful should kneel beginning right after the signing or recitation of the Holy Holy (Sanctus) until AFTER the Amen of the Eucharistic prayer. The faithful kneel again after the recitation of the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei), and upon returning to their pews after receiving Holy Communion.

"Standing: The faithful stand at Mass from the entrance procession through the opening prayer, at the Gospel, at the Creed and intercessions, the offertory prayer, for the Lord's Prayer, to receive communion and closing prayer and blessing. During the Lord's Prayer, stay in your place. DO NOT move into the aisles in order to join hands with people in the other pews.

"Hand Gestures: The faithful are not to imitate the priest's gestures. The sign of the cross is the first gesture on entering the church and at the beginning of Mass. The sign of the cross is made again at the introduction to the Gospel. At the Lord's Prayer, no hand gestures are indicated. Hands may be folded in prayer, held in the "orans" (prayer) position like the priest. Holding of hands is not prohibited, but should not be imposed. The faithful should be facing the altar during this prayer, not in a circle with each other, since the prayer is directed toward God. If you don't want to hold hands, simply say, "No thank you." If someone does not want to hold hands, they are acting appropriately and should be respected.

"Sign of Peace: Stay in your pew and DO NOT wander around the church. Offer a gesture of peace by word or handshake to those who are next to you. It is not necessary to greet everyone you know."

LATE-BREAKING NEWS ON MAY 15 from Cheryl Sullenger:

"Most of you know that the Family Planning Associates abortion mill in La Mesa had lost their lease and were being forced out. Although their lease was up as of April 30, they held over at the La Mesa site.

"Today one of our members went down to the La Mesa site to pray and discovered that today is moving day! She alerted us to the news so we immediately went to work on locating their new digs. To our surprise we found their new office will be located in the Sixth Avenue Medical Center in Hillcrest, the same office building that had evicted the WomanCare abortion mill some years earlier. Apparently they have a new owner and property manager. Mixed emotions rushed back as I recalled the old Womancare days at that site, the deathscorts, and the arrests.... Nine of us went down there to picket this afternoon as the men with trucks were moving furniture into the office. There were many supportive people (we found out that a Christian doctor has his office in the same building -- pray for him!) but there were also several who were upset. We directed them to complain to the property manager, since pressure like that is what sent fpa packing from La Mesa. Channel 6 sent down a cameraman and they interviewed two of us. However, they didn't run anything on it on their 10 pm news tonight. Here's what you can do to help:

"1. Politely call the property management company and express your concerns about an abortion mill locating in that building. San Diego Commercial Real Estate Services, Paul Sloman, (619) 497-2255.

"2. Help us keep a presence at this mill when they are open for business. They are currently scheduling abortions on Wed. and Sat beginning May 22.

"3. Pray for a miracle turn around at that building and for the eviction of the abortion mill. Also, pray for abortionist Edward Allred, the owner of the FPA empire, and abortionist Robert Santella, the local hired killer who does the actual abortions here."
