DECEMBER 2001 LITTLE NOTES
ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, Juan Vargas, self-excomminicated Catholic for his support of abortion rights, received Holy Communion during 11:00 Mass in Mission San Diego de Alcala. Vargas, who has a 100 percent approval rating from Planned Parenthood and supports domestic partners legislation, was with his family. When questioned about the incident, Monsignor Prendergast, the Mission's pastor and celebrant at that Mass, said that he had heard of Juan Vargas but would not recognize him and was not aware of his voting record (Vargas was not in Monsignor Prendergast's line at Mass). Prendergast said that as far as he knew, the local Church had no policy for pro-abortion politicians who come forward for Communion. "I hadn't heard that they were automatically excommunicated. I guess you could interpret it that way. There's a lot of moral issues where you excommunicate yourself if you deliberately do it. But how do we know who's who? I don't know him and I don't know his history, but I'm glad to be filled in on it." Juan Vargas did not return phone calls.IS IT ANY WONDER THAT VARGAS, who plays the "former Jesuit seminarian" card in newspaper stories, does not return phone calls? He voted 100 percent pro-abortion and pro-contraception on these bills this year: --SB231, expansion of health services (including abortion and contraception) at schools (Vargas voted yes) --SB780, criminalizes pro-lifers who try to help women at abortion clinics (Vargas-yes) --SB111, waives physician oversight at abortion clinics (Vargas-yes) --SB1058, perpetuates distribution of condoms and contraceptives behind parents' backs (Vargas-yes) --SB1169, provides for pharmacists to initiate "morning after" contraception therapy (Vargas-yes) --SJR3, enjoins federal government to preserve Roe v. Wade (Vargas-yes) --AB32, expands number of families elgible for contraception and abortion (Vargas-yes) --AB59, expand abortion and contraception coverage to those enrolled in free lunch and food stamp programs (Vargas-yes) --AB951, issues temporary licenses to abortion clinics up to four years before mandatory investigation of clinic compliance (Vargas-yes) --SB113, prohibits physical exam of pupils under 12 at schools without parent consent (Vargas-no) --AB130, establishes program that provides contraceptives (Vargas-yes) --AB558, prohibits schools from letting pupils leave campus without parent consent, including abortion clinic visits (Vargas-no) According to a quote from an advance press release on SDRadio.net, an Internet news site about the San Diego radio industry, "2ndOPINION's premise is to give both sides of hot health issues." Guests have included Michaelene Jenkins of Life Resource Network on stem cell research, El Cajon mayor Mark Lewis on clean needle exchanges, California Pro-Life Council director Brian Johnston on physician-assisted suicide, and "New York Myke" Shelby on body piercing and tattooing. During the summer, Harper interviewed local anti-pornography activist and "Night Lights" television show host James Lambert on the topic "The Nudist Lifestyle: Healthy or Unhealthy?" As a result of this show, Lambert in turn interviewed Harper and Father Rich Perozich, pastor of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, for a "Night Lights" segment on "Religion in the Public Forum." The show will air Sunday night, December 16, at 8:30 p.m. on Time-Warner television. Harper and her producer, Vicki Miko, described the genesis of 2ndOPINION in e-mail interviews with a News Notes reporter on July 29 and August 8: Priver's biographies on the 2ndOPINION and OB-GYN Expert Witness websites make no mention of the fact that he is an abortionist who kills pre-born children up to 14 weeks gestation and has served on the board of Planned Parenthood. In a July, 2000 article on the Catholics for a Free Choice website at Priver advocates sterilization at time of childbirth where he is quoted as calling separate surgeries with separate anesthesia "lousy medicine." Harper's support for abortion is especially ironic in light of the circumstances of her own birth. According to the "Meet Lynn" section of her website at www.LynnHarper.com, "The first sounds Lynn Harper ever made probably saved her life. Found abandoned in a Berkeley, California dumpster, her voice brought rescuers and adoption into a loving home where she was raised by two people, one white and Jewish, one black and Baptist." Shortly after the death of Mother Teresa in September 1997, Harper excoriated the Missionaries of Charity founder for her unbending stance against contraception and abortion, saying "I don't consider good telling people not to use birth control and that every kid is a smile of God.... What in the world is wrong in controlling the disease, controlling the birth control and just going out and having fun in a nice way?" During the same show, Harper also villified "the moral absolutionist views of the Roman Catholic Church on contraception" and "a celibate man teaching a couple when to have sex." "She then launched into the subject of the McCaughey septuplets, born a couple of years ago. In an incredibly angry, sarcastic tone of voice, she disparaged 'the real McCaugheys.' She was upset that none of them had been killed in the womb, either, and frankly, you really got the impression that she resented the fact that any of these fourteen little children are alive and well today, and that if she could, she would kill all of them herself right now. There was a stridency and anger toward babies in her voice that was chilling; the degree of her anti-life militancy is frightening." "Pastor Adlai Mack preached a message of repentance to the passersby while others displayed graphic signs and distributed literature warning the public of the possibility of becoming the neighbors of an abortion clinic. People came out of their shops to see what was going on. Some folks called the police, who simply told them we had every right to be there and that we were not going away. "We would like for more people to join us this Saturday (11-17) at 10:30 AM on the corner of Spring Street and La Mesa Blvd. Our attorney, Michael Kumeta, has recommended sustaining this effort for two or three more weeks, or until we get a definitive answer as to whether or not an abortion clinic is in fact going in there." A van was parked in front of the residence covered with pro-life signs. Others held hand-lettered signs that said, "Real Republicans Don't Kill Babies," "Top Gun [Cunningham] Misfires on Abortion," "Duke and Zettel Racist? Abortion Targets Minorities," "Duke and Zettel Betray Kids and Republican Party, Who's Next," and "Cowardly Cunningham Betrays Babies." Two sheriff's squad cars and a paddy wagon loomed, but there were no arrests. The sheriffs tried to make protesters stand across the street from the driveway entrance to the house. Cheryl Sullenger, director of the California Life Coalition, said, "They were really not going to let us picket in front of the driveway. I asked them if it were a public trail, and they said 'Yes.' When they tried to move us off, I asked, 'Are you kidding me? What authority do you have to restrict my constitutional right to free speech?' The sheriff said, 'If you want to be difficult, I'm not going to talk to you.' I said, 'I'm not being difficult, I'm just trying to find out why you are saying this.' "One officer had said they had an ordinance 'allowing' us to stand several feet away, but we were at the end of a driveway where they had three other homes. The case Frisbee vs. Schultz has a really narrow definition of what [residential] targeting is, but it didn't apply in this case at all." Pro-lifer Heather Mechanic, a family counselor with offices in Poway, passed out literature and rebuked occupants of cars as they entered the driveway of the gala, saying "God will not bless America as long as it sheds the blood of innocent babies." Several vehicles missed the entrance, so a couple in a golf cart came up to put red, white and blue balloons on mailboxes near the entrance. The man in the golf cart angrily told pro-lifer Allyson Smith, "I've had an abortion. Have you ever had one?" Smith answered, "Yes, I've had one, and that's why I'm on this [the pro-life] side now." Smith later spoke to a guard who stood in the driveway entrance checking people who arrived, asking him, "Are you Catholic?" When he said "Yes," Smith told him that Charlene Zettel proclaims herself to be Catholic too, receives Holy Communion, yet condones contraception and the killing of the unborn. "She is a scandal to the Church, like Ted Kennedy and Patrick Leahy." |
